About Field Trip Quilting
We love the old stuff—the faded florals, quirky little geometrics, novelty prints, traditional quilts, and fabrics that look like they’ve lived a life. But we also love what’s happening right now: bold color, unexpected combinations, designers with cult-like followings, and fabric that makes you stop scrolling and think, Oh, I need that.
That’s the sweet spot we’re after.
Field Trip is an online quilt shop built around a simple idea: crafting should make you happy. We curate modern quilting cottons, precuts, quilt patterns, books, kits, and the little things that make a sewing project come to life. Our shelves are filled with fabric from some of our favorite designers and makers, with an emphasis on color, personality, and prints that have something to say.
Whether you’re making your first quilt, your fiftieth, or simply collecting fabric for the project you swear you’re eventually going to make—we’re happy you’re here.
Meet Darci
Field Trip Quilting is owned and operated by Darci Read, a lifelong creative and textile-obsessed maker based in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Darci started quilting in 2010 when her first niece was born. At the time, she was living in a tiny apartment in the Lower East Side, and decided that making a baby quilt would be a small project that could be taken on the subway to work on during her commute to her job at an ad agency.
Dearest gentle reader, it was not.
16 years, hundreds of projects, and what eventually became an alarming amount of fabric later, quilting has become much more than a hobby.
Darci brings a background in design, branding, marketing and creative direction to Field Trip, which means she approaches fabric looking for the stories it tells. She’s interested in the relationship between color, pattern and nostalgia—but also in why textiles and quilts make us irrationally happy. The connection to the old ways is what drew her in, but the discovery that happens along the way is what keeps her coming back.
Why Field Trip?
Because quilting should get you out of your head.
A field trip is an excuse to wander. To discover something you weren’t looking for. To take a different route home. To stop at the weird little shop. To bring home something you absolutely did not need.
That’s the spirit behind Field Trip.
We want shopping for fabric to feel less like checking something off a supply list and more like finding treasure. We want you to stumble across a print that sparks an idea, fall down a rabbit hole of color combinations, and leave with a project you can’t wait to start.
At Field Trip, we like quilts that are beautifully designed but not precious. We understand that the project starts with the perfect fabric. We like traditional techniques used in unexpected ways. We love a little weirdness. And we firmly believe that there is no such thing as having too much fabric—only insufficient storage.
Fabric with a point of view
Our goal isn't to stock everything, it’s to find the good stuff.
Field Trip carries contemporary quilting fabric and precuts, patterns, books, kits, and other things we think belong in a very good sewing room. Moda, Ruby Star Society, Andover, Riley Blake, Fableism-those are just some of the name brands we carry. Looking for something special? Reach out!
We’re constantly looking for the next print, designer, or collection that makes us want to clear off the cutting table and start something new.
Field Trip Quilting is a small, independent shop run by a quilter who genuinely loves this stuff.
Let's go find some fabric!
